#PURECOMMUNITY

We have more than buds sprouting this Spring!

In partnership with the Growing Futures program of the Parkdale Food Centre - we have been working with a grade 6 class at Churchill Alternative School. This group of youth have been growing & harvesting greens throughout the winter using a tower garden in their classroom, cultivating their gardening and entrepreneurial skills!

With two class appointed CEO’s - approximately once a month we receive their freshly cut greens and herbs delivered to our Westboro location - sometimes by a couple classmates or a pod of them. It’s the highlight of the day for our staff working when they arrive!

This program broadens  the students exposure to healthy & fresh food, business awareness, food sovereignty, and their local community. We’ve had the pleasure of being in the classroom to plant their harvest, along with making salads & salad dressings with one of their first harvests!

Seeing them come for seconds and thirds of salads was unbelievable - they were very clearly proud of what they helped grow! We use the produce they supply within 24 – 48 hours during our lunch and dinner services at our Westboro location.

We are slowly beginning to develop more curriculum based visits for classrooms as we believe that healthy communities start from the ground up - with our youth, with our farmers and with the community that supports us. If you’re a teacher and are interested in partnering with us for an in-house visit or field trip - please email tara@purekitchenottawa.com.
