March Community Smoothie

This vibrant March community smoothie packs a nutritional punch while fueling you up!

Here’s what you’ll need to make this smoothie:
• 8oz of our cold-pressed organic Electrify juice ( beet / pineapple / cucumber / apple / ginger / lemon)
• 1 banana
• 1 cup frozen blueberries
• 1 cup or large handful spinach
– Blitz it up and start your day like a champ!

Nutritional Benefits:

The uniquely vibrant colour of beets are a great indicator of their extremely high antioxidant properties. The pigments that give beets their rich colors are called betalains. These betalains, coupled with the fact that beets are also high in the antioxidants manganese and vitamin C make them a powerhouse for tissue repair.

Beets help to support liver function. The liver is the body’s main organ of detoxification and when liver function is compromised all major bodily functions are affected. Betalains help to prevent and reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver, improving liver function and actually reducing liver size!

Beets are extremely high in anti-inflammatory properties making them ideal for supporting heart health and helping to improve blood pressure. Beets are very high in nitrates - which the body converts to nitric acid - a compound that relaxes and dilates blood vessels, turning them into superhighways for your nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood. That means better circulation, and possibly lower blood pressure and improved brain function!

Pineapple is incredibly helpful in digestion. It contains an enzyme called bromelain which is known for its role in protein digestion. This explains why pineapple is often paired with hard to digest proteins, such as tofu or meat, in many traditional cuisines.

Cucumbers are incredibly hydrating which contributes to healthy skin and promotes healthy weight loss.

Ginger is well known for its calming effect on the gastrointestinal system making it ideal in supporting optimal digestion. Ginger is also great for giving the immune system a boost. The subtle warming effect ginger has on the body actually signals to germ fighting agents which ward off infection.

Known as the ‘King of Antioxidants’, blueberries help to reduce DNA damage. This will help to protect against aging as well as against degenerative disease and cancer by helping to neutralize harmful free-radicals in cells.

Another powerful antioxidant! Spinach actually contains two specific components, MGDG and SQDG, which may slow down cancer growth and even suppress cancer formation. Spinach is also super important for eye health! Along with vitamin A, spinach contains high amounts of zeaxanthin and lutein, which are the carotenoids responsible for helping the eye detect contrast better.

As a final note:
This smoothie will be full of FIBRE, from the blueberries and spinach - helping you to stay full longer and contributing to optimal gut health!

Our March community smoothie was in partnership with Planned Parenthood Ottawa. Though many other Planned Parenthood locations do provide medical services for sexual and reproductive health, (like birth control prescriptions, and STI testing and treatment), Planned Parenthood Ottawa does not. Planned Parenthood Ottawa mostly provides sexual and reproductive health education, training, information and referral services and pregnancy options counselling. Want more information?
